Women often see the success that others have and think, “It’s possible for her but not for me.” They don’t believe their passion could actually make money for them.
Nicola's story (featured this week on the podcast, episode 6) proves that anyone can create success for themselves with the right mindset, actions & support. She has created a fulfilling career & life as a mom to a 1-year-old little girl, working only 2 1/2 days a week, all while completing her work to become a U.S. Citizen.
Many people may look at Nicola Watson's success and think that her circumstances were different so it was easier for her, but once you hear her story, you'll realize that if it is possible for her, it is absolutely possible for you.
On the podcast she shares her journey, the lessons and decisions she had to make along the way (including the moments that scared her the most). To listen in, check out the link at the bottom of the email.
Nicola Watson moved to the U.S. from Jamaica in 2001 for her undergraduate studies. Although she had a successful academic career, Nicola always dreamed of being a fashion designer. But a career in fashion was something that wasn’t valued in her home country. Because of this, she faced doubt & fear in following her passion, but she realized that she would only be happy if she spent her days doing work that she loved. She decided to attend fashion school, despite worrying that she was making the wrong decision because she wouldn't be able to have the type of financial success that she really wanted. This led her to a successful career as a corporate fashion designer for Target and Abercrombie & Fitch, but during her time in corporate, she began to feel like she wasn't reaching her full potential. She eventually went out on her own and started Le Fashion Lab, teaching others how to take the leap into the fashion industry and follow their own business dreams.
“Results are based on strategy, execution, focus, clarity, and consistency in the work you’re doing.” - Blake Schofield (46:55-47:05)
Today, Nicola’s Le Fashion Lab has become a place where fashion enthusiasts can take courses and learn all the critical skills in fashion design to successfully pursue their dreams in the fashion industry...and do it at a fraction of the time & cost of a traditional fashion college. Her success has come as a direct result of the clarity, strategy & consistent actions she took when determining the bigger impact that she wanted to make.
Paving a Path to Your Dream Business
Misconceptions that get in the way of business success include the belief that your passion won’t pay you or that you need to stress yourself out (or work crazy hours) just to make it all happen. As a result, people settle for less, but don't have to.
In fact, when Nicola and Blake first started working together in February 2018, Nicola's business wasn't profitable, she had already tried on her own to grow it, but was struggling with lack of focus. She didn't have confidence as to whether this business could actually support her financially & was debating going back into the corporate world.
You can avoid these common traps for early entrepreneurs by seeking wise counsel from a mentor or coach who has already accomplished what you are wanting to achieve.
While the early path as a business owner can feel a bit like you are walking forward trying to reach the light at the end of the tunnel, there are KEY indicators you should be looking at to ensure that the work you are doing is leading you in the right direction. It’s important to know when your business isn’t working so you can realign your strategy for success - this is why it is important to understand what numbers to look at and how to measure progress. Once you know how to do that, you can understand where and how you need to shift in order to successfully gain traction in your business.
In Nicola's case, taking a step back to assess what was and wasn't working in her business, what her advantage could be in the market & what was the highest impact and value she could offer, allowed us to re-position her business so that others could clearly see the potential & value it offered.
The Importance of Mindset + Clarity
If you realize that you can train your brain to focus on creating success, you can reprogram your mind & eliminate limiting beliefs that stop most entrepreneurs in their tracks. Thinking too small is one of the biggest mistakes people make. Even Nicola, who had great success in her academic & corporate career, struggled to have the confidence to run her own business. When we began working together, she was debating letting her business go and had no idea that her business had the potential to do 7+ figures a year in sales.
Having the clarity to follow your passion in business is the first step to your own success in anything you do. If you don't know where you are going, you will never get there...and worse yet, you will spend months or years trying to make a business work when the market (because of your lack of clarity) doesn't even understand the true value you can offer. All entrepreneurs encounter self-doubt and trepidation along the journey; however, if you take action in spite of the struggles that come your way, you can achieve your own entrepreneurial success.
As Nicola pushed through limiting beliefs, got counsel and support, she was able to make her dreams come true, pursue her passion, and build a business around something as “non-traditional” as fashion design.
As a result of her dedication, Nicola closed over $450,000 in sales in 2018 on a business that had sold $50,000 the year prior...and she is just getting started!
“When you have clarity, it’s easier to pave a path to success.”
- Nicola Watson (6:57-7:03)
Every woman owes it to herself to be living her passion and purpose...and as Nicola shares, money and fear aren't the real barriers, they are the excuses we tell ourselves that hold us back from creating the life we deserve. Real and lasting success comes when you believe that your dreams are possible for you. Align your actions & gain the support you need to create the biggest version of your life.
